A few important dates to note....

Welcome! We are so excited to have you and your student join us next fall! Folwell is an amazing community of learners and we’re eager to have you join us as Folwell Falcons!

When we are at Folwell for our learning,  a typical school day includes breakfast, a morning meeting to build relationships and community within the classroom, whole group and small group instruction and practice reading and math, read a louds, silent reading time, and snack.  Social Studies and Science are integrated within the other learning opportunities.  Support staff provide services in special education, speech, reading, English Languge and Gifted and Talented Education.  There are also special areas taught by other teachers. These include Physical Education, Music, Media and Art. Students also go to the cafeteria for lunch and then have recess outside. We utilize “SOAR” as the guide to our school expectations: Safety, Own Your Behavior, Always Learning and Respectful.

Through Distance Learning, teachers have worked together to identify the prioritized educational standards for students. Lessons are presented using Google Classroom and Seesaw. Students watch videos, share their learning in different and virtual ways, as well as connect with Google Meets. There are a few Google Meets for the entire class throughout the week and then there are individualized opportunities each week, as well. Students utilize home computers and devices, or the school can also provide them with a Chromebook or an iPad.

Whether we are physically at school or in our virtual spaces, it is our priority and commitment to continue cultivating relationships with students and families. We will continue to plan for next fall with your student and family’s best interests in mind. We will communicate updates from both the District and school level as we get closer to the fall.

Folwell utilizes a FaceBook page to share announcements and celebrations about our school. You can find us at facebook.com/folwellelementaryschool. We encourage you to “like” us and begin to share with your student as a way to help them get to know things about their new learning environment. We also use a blog as our school wide newsletter. We encourage you to go to the blog and enter your email address so that you receive updates. You can access this at www.folwell.info. When school begins, you will receive newsletters from your child’s teacher.

Please mark your calendar with some important dates. Folwell kicks off the school year with “Step Into Learning.” This is an opportunity for families to have an individual conference with the teacher. You will receive communication in August with instructions and links to sign up for a time on either August 31 or September 1. Finally, the first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year will be September 2!!

As you know this is uncharted territory for our Folwell Families, Rochester Public Schools, and our entire state. We have heard from the Minnesota Department of Education that additional guidance and decisions on how school will run in the fall will be announced the week of July 27.  We are proud of our school and staff efforts with Distance Learning and equally proud of the partnership with our families. We will work hard to build relationships with your family and your student as we embark on this journey!

Once again, welcome to Folwell! We use a mantra, “Together We Will.” We know that with your partnership we’ll continue to do great things!

Please feel free to call or email if you have questions.

Folwell Family Listening Posts for Students and Families

6/2/2020
Dear Folwell Families,
Earlier this week we shared a message with you acknowledging our mourning of the death of George Floyd and the unrest in our nation.  The message was also to affirm you and your family that we love you, care about and we are here for you.
Our Folwell Staff wants to remind you that we are here for you and your families.  We love and care about you and your families!  All are welcome here!  You are respected here!  You are supported here!  Folwell: “Together We Will!”
Please remember that if you want to talk with someone, you can call my office, 328-3224, email me, wemoritz@rochester.k12.mn.us, or call our school resource line to work with our counselor, Stephanie Evans Hanson, or our school social worker, Lindy Lange, at 328-4971.
At Folwell we use the acronym S.O.A.R. with our students and I am truly astonished as to how often this connects to life, too.  We are A – Always Learning and during these unprecedented times, we want to look for new ways to talk through things that are happening around us.
Tomorrow night, Wednesday, June 3, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., we will be hosting a Google Meet Listening Post, inviting all of our students.  Students of color are also invited to an additional Google Meet Listening Post from 7:30-8:30pm.  We want to offer a safe space to respectfully listen to how all of our students and families are feeling.

Folwell: “TOGETHER WE WILL!”

A special message and end of the year details...

Dear Folwell Families -

What a spring this has been! Our lives have changed and we have made constant adjustments as a result of the safety measures around the virus, Covid-19.    Now, more recent current events may be conjuring up many other emotions.  Coupled with wrapping up school and questions about the fall, it can feel stressful and overwhelming at times.

Rochester Public Schools Superintendent Michael Munoz shared this message yesterday:

“The Rochester Public Schools community is mourning the horrific death of George Floyd. His life mattered and we grieve this untimely death.  It is heart wrenching to be physically distanced from our staff and our students during this difficult time.  We know you’re hurting.  But despite the distance, we want you, our staff, students, and community to know you are loved, supported and you matter.  We value inclusivity, where everyone can participate and reach their full potential.  Race should never predict life or death.
We are committed to the well-being of all of our students and staff.  For positive change to occur, we must all be advocates for racial justice.  We stand with our neighbors in the Twin Cities.  Please take care of yourself, and your neighbors.”

Here are some additional reminders for the upcoming week:
