Follow Folwell on Twitter!

Folwell Elementary has now joined Twitter. Twitter provides a very effective manner for sharing spur of the moment experiences at Folwell that wouldn't normally be shared in a mass email to parents through Skyward or on our blog. It can be difficult to maintain effective communication between school and home due to the fast paced world we live in. We certainly hope parents will take the time to follow us to stay informed of the many great student experiences that happen daily at Folwell.

Please visit https://twitter.com/FolwellFalcons or click on the banner to the right and become a follower!

Welcome Mrs. Laura Schulte!

I would like to share that the Grade 2 LTS position has been filled. Mrs. Laura Schulte has accepted the position and will begin on Monday. We had already arranged for Mrs. Bev Lehman to sub in the classroom on Monday and Tuesday. Both, Mrs. Lehman and Mrs. Schulte will be in the classroom together for two days. On Wednesday, Mrs. Schulte will then assume the classroom on her own. I will introduce her to the students on Monday morning.

Mrs. Schulte comes to us with 15 years of experience in the classroom, 13 of which were in the Rochester Catholic Schools. She loves students and is anxious to begin sharing her excitement of learning with the students.

We will also be planning an evening after school where parents will have the opportunity to meet Mrs. Schulte. It will take place during the week of December 2. We will provide specific date and time for this meeting by the end of next week.

Thank you for your patience and support as we work together to assist the students during this transitional period of time.

Winter Expectations

With snowflakes in the air, it is a good time to provide a review of our Snow Expectations at Folwell for our students.
  1. Keep snow on the ground so students stay safe.
  2. Stay on sidewalks when coming to school in the morning and when leaving after school. Students are asked to not play on any snow hills at this time.
  3. Be careful on the ice. Students are not allowed to run and then slide across ice patches on the playground.
  4. Wear winter jacket, snow pants and boots to play in the snow and on the equipment. Students who do not have boots and snow pants will need to stay on the pavement.
  5. Students are allowed to make forts, however, there is no guarantee that it will be there the following day.

If any families have winter outer wear in decent shape and no longer have uses for it in your home then please consider donating it to Folwell Elementary. Our supply for winter clothing is limited at this time. Folwell and families in need of these necessities will greatly appreciate your generosity.

25th Anniversary GATEway Science Fair

Calling all students in grades 3-6, GATEway is proud to announce the 25th Annual GATEway Science Fair.  This is a great chance to be a scientist!  There are three ways to get involved:  1) Register for the fair, 2) Sign-up for a Free Workshop, 3) Help design the 2014 Science Fair T-shirt.

To begin, the GATEway Science Fair will be held Sat. Feb. 22, 2014 from 12:30 to 4:30 PM in the Gonda Building of the Mayo Clinic. You can register now at  www.rochester.thatscommunityed.com  and start thinking about project ideas.  You can also find more information about  the GATEway Science Fair at www.rochestergateway.com.

If you need a little help getting started or are curious about how to put a science project together, then sign up for one of our free “How-To” Workshops. You'll learn what a science fair project is and get ideas for one of your own. You will also learn how to prepare the display board and get tips on how to explain it to reviewers at the science fair. Scientists will be on hand to demonstrate some sample experiments and help you get started.

Our “How-To” Workshops are free, but pre-registration is required. Workshops are open to students in grades 3-6 and their parents and will be held in the RCTC Heintz Center in the Commons. Choose between two available times: Tues., Dec. 3, 2013, 6:30-8:00 PM, or Sat. Dec. 7, 2013, 1:00-2:30 PM. Last but not least, to commemorate our 25th anniversary, we are having a contest to create the 2014 Science Fair T-shirt design.  We are looking for ideas in the form of a description, a sketch, or actual artwork.  Please check in the Science Fair link of our website at www.rochestergateway.com for more details.  Entry deadline is Wed. We Need Your Help!!

Every year Folwell sends its entire 5th grade to Eagle Bluff Environmental Center for an unforgettable two-day, overnight field trip.  This trip is made affordable to all of our students thanks to the PTSA and our two major fundraisers, SCRIP gift cards and the Staff Vs. 5th Grade Basketball game.

The SCRIP gift card order forms have been sent home a couple of times this year already.  The next order will be sent out Thursday, October 24th.

Please consider helping to support our fifth grade classes so that all students at Folwell will have this opportunity when they are in 5th grade!

Below is a short video highlighting last year's Folwell trip to Eagle Bluff.  Enjoy!

Extreme Saver Coupon Books

Please join us and help support your children’s education by sharing this year’s fundraiser with friends and family.

You child should have brought home 5 coupon books, title Extreme Saver Coupon Book.  Students selling all 5 books and returning the money to the school by Thursday, October 31 will be in a drawing for a remote control helicopter. The drawing will take place on Friday, November 1.

The profits will be used to fund the many PTSA sponsored activities that make learning fun at Folwell.

Due to the additional fundraisers the past two years in support of the playground addition, the PTSA has determined that this will be the major fundraiser for the school year.

The PTSA has been vital in providing support of technological advances in our classrooms and have now made a commitment to helping support the purchasing of leveled books for students, a critical need for students to continue expanding their reading abilities.

Once your child has sold the initial 5 and would be able to sell additional books then feel free to stop in to the Folwell Office and Charlotte will be able to check them out to you.

The books are the property of Folwell Elementary PTSA and must be returned to school if not sold. Please return all money and unsold books on or before November 5th. Prizes will be awarded to the students selling the most coupon books.

Once again, thank you for your continued support of Folwell Elementary.

Bingo Night!

Make sure to put Folwell Bingo Night on your calendar. It will take place on Thursday, November 7 from 5:30-7:30. It is events like this where families can meet and enjoy each others company that makes Folwell a special community.

Walk to School Day

Walk to School Day will be Wednesday, October 9 before school. Rumor has it we may even have Sparty in attendance supporting the students who participate at Running Club and the students who will be walking to school that day. It is always a great opportunity to embrace the importance of healthy living and especially for students to see adults modeling its importance.

Traffic

Please remember to follow the basic transportation rules when dropping off in the morning and picking up at the end of the day. We  do not want any students crossing the street to enter a car. We request that cars only park on the West side of 15th Ave when dropping off and picking up children. We also ask that cars are not left unattended on in front of Folwell on 15th Ave. Traffic needs to continue to flow so students can be dropped off and picked up in an efficient manner. If you need to stop into the school in the morning then you need to park on 7th St or behind the school and walk up to Door #1. We also ask you for your patience when proceeding so our 5th grade patrol members and the people they are crossing remain safe.

Fall Conferences

Conferences are fast approaching. The majority of them will take place on October 10 and 15 from 4:00-8:00. Due to some grade levels having larger classes they may need to take place on an alternative date and time. We do schedule multiple student families together so your conferences will take place one after the other. Look for information to be coming home soon with your child. We do provide daycare in the media center from 4:00-8:00 on the 10th and 15th.

We Need Your Help!

Folwell is interested in old Halloween outfits that your children have outgrown. Please feel free to donate these costumes to Folwell Elementary. Costumes can be brought to the office of the school nurse. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Flu Shots Monday!

Reminder...Our School Influenza Vaccination Clinic will be helped on Monday, September 30th, from 1-3 pm.  Registration is required and can be found below.  Parents can also pick up a paper form at the school health office

Folwell has partnered with Olmsted County Public Health, Mayo Clinic and Olmsted Medical Center to provide a collaborative School-Located influenza Immunization Clinic. This is a fast, easy and convenient way to keep our children, our school and our community healthy throughout the year.

Sign up by clicking on the following link:
http://semnbeacon.wordpress.com/about/flu/

Why should I get my child vaccinated?

Influenza (“Flu”) is a contagious disease that can cause severe illness, absence from work and school and even death.  Getting vaccinated can protect your child and you from getting influenza and avoid spreading it to others. Influenza viruses are always changing, so the Centers for Disease Control, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Family Practitioners now recommend annual influenza vaccination for everyone 6 months of age and older. Both flu mist and shots will be available based on student medical need.

How do I pay?

Your health insurance will be billed by your provider, as indicated on the registration form. If your family does not have health insurance, you child can still receive the vaccine, but you will be billed $21.22. This fee may be waived as necessary.

How do I sign my child up?

Registration is required. If you would like your child to participate in this clinic, please go the Folwell’s main website to complete the registration form electronically. Online forms must be completed and signed by parent or guardian.  Paper registration forms are also available in the school’s main office.

Where can I get more information?  Please check out these links: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/parents/

We Need Your Help!

Throughout the school year, various clothing items are needed for students because they get wet or lost or have been forgotten, etc. When these needs arise, the nurse would like to e-mail a group of families who would be willing to check around their home for any of these items (that have been gently used and you are no longer using) and bring them to the Folwell Health Office. Wouldn't that be awesome? If you are interested in being on this list, please e-mail Kerrie Bonacci at kerrie.bonacci@bellalulu.org. Thank you so much! Have a wonderful day!

Fall Calendar

Keep up with what is going at Folwell over the next few months by taking a look at the Folwell PTSA-At-A-Glance  calendar.

Running Club Expectations

We are wrapping up our second week of running club. It is exciting to see so many students out running/walking before school. We are averaging about 100 kids participating in running club each morning.  Thank you, to the many volunteers/parents who help to keep kids safe and running club operating smoothly.  With 100 kids every morning, extra parents/volunteers are always appreciated.

As we head into our 3rd week, registrations are slowing down and a review of running club expectations seems in order.   If your child is participating in running club please review the following expectations with them.

1.      Everyone is welcome at running club, we all help to make it a safe and welcoming activity
2.      Check in with a volunteer to have your attendance recorded
3.      Follow the designated route
4.      Keep hands and feet to yourself
5.      Do not run carrying anything: backpacks, sticks, food, toys, electronics etc.
6.      Collect your backpack, jackets, water bottles etc. before heading into school

When the playground is too muddy we will run around the block across the street.  Please check in at the corner of 15th Avenue and 7th Street.  Always cross the street at this corner with an adult or crossing guard.  Stay on the sidewalk while running and out of neighbors’ yards.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact Sarah Lichty sflichty@q.com

Junior Great Books

Parents,
The Junior Great Books program offers students an opportunity to read and discuss stories and poetry in small groups with grade level peers and an adult facilitator. Through "shared inquiry," young readers reach their own interpretations of literature. There are not right or wrong answers. Students are encouraged to support their opinions with passages from the texts they read. In many studies, the JBG methods have proven to significantly develop children's critical thinking skills. Lunch Bunch Book Club uses the JGD book series. JGB is FREE for Folwell students and is sponsered by the PTSA.

For more information click below.

Our program needs your help!  If you are interested in learning more about how you can volunteer to with a lunch group, please click below.

Fall Running Club

Running Club begins Monday, September 9th and runs until Friday October 11th.
We meet everyday before school on the playground at 8:45 until first bell.
Running Club is a FREE event sponsored by the PTSA.  Students run or walk laps around the playground (6 laps = 1 mile).  The goal is to teach students to set goals and to improve fitness.  Teachers report that those students who participate in running club come to class ready to learn.

Everyone is welcome. You can show up once or as many times as you like. At the end of each week there will be a drawing for those students who have attended all 5 days of the week.   We will not keep track of laps.  This is for fun or you can use this time to prepare for the Kevin Langlie Memorial One Mile Fun Run on October 8th at Century High School (informational flyer will be forthcoming).

Remember to wear running shoes.  No open toed shoes will be allowed.  Also, do not drop your children off in the parking lot unless accompanied to the playground by an adult.   There will be no running club if inclement weather.
All students must have a parent’s signature to participate.  BRIGHT ORANGE registration forms went home in the folders on Meet the Teacher Night.  Extra forms can be found in the cabinet in front of the main office.
Please contact Sarah Lichty (sflichty@q.com) if you have any questions.

We are in need of volunteers.
We will meet everyday before school on the playground at 8:45 and run until first bell.  Volunteers help keep track of attendance, supervise and help to make running club a safe and welcoming place for everyone.
In the event of rain or inclement weather running club will be canceled.  Please click on the link below to sign up to volunteer.  If all the slots are full, know that extra volunteers are always welcome.

Parking

The flow of traffic around Folwell can be very hectic before and after school. We do ask you to follow a few important rules.

  1. When dropping students off in the morning, you cannot park on 15th Ave and walk your child into the building. Parked cars slows down the traffic and at times can even block traffic on 6th Street.
  2. When dropping off students, we also ask that you pull down closer to the main entrance to FO. This provides a much safer environment for our crossing guard and students.
  3. Absolutely no parking is allowed on the East side of 15th Avenue when dropping off or picking up students. Students are not allowed to cross the traffic.
  4. If there is a need to come into the building when dropping off your child then you need to park behind the school or along 7th Street.

Security Buzzer

We have installed a new buzzer system, as did all the schools in Rochester.  The purpose of this system  is for the safety of our children.

Everyone in the district will now have to be buzzed into the school during school hours. You can find the buzzer for door 1 on the south side of the door. This is the only door visitors will be allowed to enter during the school day.

  • Once you are buzzed in you must report to the office.
  • Everyone visiting a school building is required by the district to sign in to the building ( wear a name tag) no matter the length of your stay.  This is for your safety.  We need to know who is in the building in case of fire or an emergency.
  • When you are done in the building you must stop by the office to sign out.
  • This also includes VIE. Volunteers will report to the office to sign in instead of signing in outside the office in the hallway.

There may be times when an office personnel will not be immediately available to answer the buzzer request so we ask for your patience in advance. The number one priority for installing the buzzers is safety of students.
