LOTS of volunteer opportunities for November!

Hello Folwell Families!

We have some really fun activities coming up in the next few weeks! Please consider volunteering your time to make these events great for our kids!

Kids VOTE 11/4

Folwell School has partnered with Minnesota Civic Youth organization to provide our students the opportunity to ‘vote’ in the Kids Voting program. Official Student polling spots will be set up at Folwell School.  These polling spots will include voting booths, a ballot box, “I Voted” stickers, and more!  We will be able to see our Student results, as they compare to other Kids Voting sites across the nation, as well as how they compare to the general election this fall.  We will only be voting on President and Vice President.

We need parent volunteers to fill 2 hour shifts to help with the voting process.  Volunteers will help guide students through filling out the ballot in the "booth" and handing the ballot in to the "Ballot box."

Book Fair 11/7-11/10
Folwell’s annual Scholastic Book Fair will be up and running in the next couple of weeks.  Proceeds from all book sales will benefit our school media center.  The kids LOVE this exciting week, and we need volunteers to help with book sales!

Bingo Night 11/10
Come celebrate the final night of the Book Fair with Bingo Night, from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm!  In order to make this big event a success, we need families to help in the kitchen, meal ticket sales and clean-up afterward.  This event is particularly special because everyone wins a prize, regardless of whether they win a Bingo.  Please also consider donating new or gently used items for Bingo Prizes.  Prizes can be delivered to a donation bin outside the school office.

Morning Movers 11/14/2016- 3/30/2017
Grab your sneakers!! Morning movers is BACK!   Morning Movers will run 8:40 am-9:00 am, Monday through Friday.  November 14- March 30, 2017.

Morning Movers is a FREE event sponsored by the PTSA to help get kids exercise, movement and fun before school starts.  Studies have shown that physical activity can improve concentration, mental alertness and overall academic performance.  Since starting this program last year, Folwell saw a huge improvement in academic success and test scores.

Exercises will be led by Mr. Smiley, our P.E. teacher, as well as by community members, such as Zumba teachers from the RAC and others.

We need parent volunteers to help encourage participation and guide kids through the pre-planned exercises.  Come join the fun-- no athletic experience or fitness level needed!

Kids Build (11/15)

Folwell School is partnering with North Central States Regional Council of Carpenter and several area construction contractors to bring Kids Build Workshop to Folwell School.  This is an incredible new opportunity for Folwell School, and all students will get to participate at some point during the day on Tuesday, November 15.

Volunteer professional carpenters will work with students to apply classroom learning to a hands-on experience.

We need parent volunteers from each grade to help students through the building process.  Sign-up by grade is listed on the Folwell Blog page, www.folwell.info.  Please "Click to Volunteer."  You are welcome to volunteer for as many slots as you would like!

Hearing and vision 11/17
Hearing and Vision screening for Folwell School will occur on 11/ 17 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am.  We need a few parent volunteers to help shuttle kids to and from their classrooms.

As always, so sign up for these events, please visit the Folwell Blog site www.folwell.info, and “Click to Volunteer.”  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

#FITwithFAMILY

Your friendly neighborhood PE teacher here.  Fit is a word that can sometimes carry some pretty intimidating notions.  The image of being fit is portrayed in some very different and sometimes distorted ways in the media and other very visible platforms.  This year at Folwell, I’d like to start a change in how our students view physical activity.  I believe that being fit is much more of mental state of well-being that benefits not just our lives, but the lives of those that we care about the most, our Family.

That being said, I’d like to start a monthly challenge to our Folwell community.  Let’s call it #FITwithFAMILY.  Each month, in an effort to inspire our students to get up and get active, I will post a challenge to our entire Folwell Family.  Each challenge will highlight an activity that any family can do with their loved ones, for free! I will highlight these challenges here at school with a tracker posted in the gym keeping an eye on the progress towards reaching our goal!  What better way to inspire our students to be active and healthy than enjoying it with our family!

What do you have to do?  Easy, get up and get moving with your family!  You can track your #FITwithFAMILY activity by sending me an email or picture or having your child tell me at school!  All things count!

The theme for October will be Walking!  Set a family goal!  How far can you go!?!

Walk to School Day!

Join us in walking, biking or scooting to school on Wednesday, October 5, for "Walk to School Day." Local celebrities, students and parents will join us on this special day!

There were 97 students who walked, biked or scooted to school on Friday, September 30.  31 students rode the bus.  184 students got a ride.

On Monday, there were 110 students who walked, biked or scooted to school!  There were 33 on the bus and 214 got a ride to school!

Folwell is unique in that two-thirds of our students live in the walk boundary.  Would it work for your family to walk, bike and scoot to and from school, in lieu of driving?

This WALK TO SCHOOL DAY event can help us continue to raise awareness for family fitness and safe routes to school for our students!

Olmsted County Elementary schools will celebrate
International Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5, 2016
Twenty Olmsted County schools will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.
Students will be walking and biking to school along with parents, teachers, Mayor Brede, the RCTC football players, Ice Hawks Hockey team, Mayo Athletes who are Folwell Alum, TV and media personalities, Miss Minnesota, Slider from the Honkers, and more!
The event will take place from 8:30 to 9:15 with kids and parents walking and biking from home to school.  Even students who typically ride the bus and are not able to walk to school will be able to be active before school as there will be fun playground activities, walking routes and some schools will have athletes on hand to play sports before school.

Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools and the broader community.  The public is asked to be aware of school zones, slow down for walkers and bikers near schools and refrain from distracted driving.
The event is being organized by Olmsted County Statewide Health Improvement Program.
