Morning Movers Sign Up - NEW LOOK!!

Morning  Movers Sign Up

Sign up today!

Morning Movers is a FREE event sponsored by the PTSA! This year we are excited to be incorporating GENERATION POUND into our programming. Click on the link to learn more about this exiting program! Other activities will include dance fitness and fitness circuits utilizing scooters, jump ropes and more.

Everyone is welcome, come as little or as often as you like. We are asking parents to sign your students up online this year by January 2nd if your child does plan to attend during the program. Please wear athletic shoes when you attend!

If you have any questions or you would like to volunteer just contact Sarah Pachetti.

What: Folwell Winter Fitness Club
Who: All students Kindergarten through 5th Grade
When: Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings starting January 7th through March 1st, 8:30 AM-9:00 AM.
Where: Folwell Gymnasium
Why: Because exercise has proven impact on learning...and it's fun! (see below)

Dr. Ratey, author of the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain, writes that exercise improves learning on three levels: "First, it optimizes your mind-set to improve alertness, attention, and motivation; second, it prepares and encourages nerve cells to bind to one another, which is the cellular basis for logging in new information; and third, it spurs the development of new nerve cells from stem cells in the hippocampus." In short, not only does exercise help the brain get ready to learn but it actually makes retaining information easier.

In addition to supporting the Folwell PTSA, gives back by offering several different prizes that can be won throughout the campaign. Identity Day, Thursday, November 15

IDENTITY DAY - Thursday, November 15!

“The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.” Neil Gaiman

Folwell Elementary School has embarked on an inquiry project called “Identity Day” to discover what each of us is passionate about.  This project culminates innovation and imagination through art, design, science, technology, engineering and mathematics while enhancing school culture, community and student engagement. The philosophy behind Identity Day is to share what students are passionate about and create some type of display or presentation to show this interest.  Through this learning journey we will discover more about ourselves and about each other, building our relationships and strengthening our community.  As staff members, we can use our knowledge of students’ passions to connect to curriculum and learning objectives, too!

Students explore the question, “What is one thing about you that you would really love to share about yourself?” Thank you for supporting your child in discovering his/her passion and creating a display!  Displays can include technology, artifacts, images, and written contributions.  Your child’s has communicated more with you about the specifics of each class, as well.

This project will culminate in an Identity Day celebration on Thursday afternoon, after student dismissal, on November 15, with students displaying their passion projects.  During the day on Thursday, November 15, students will share their projects with one another.  They’ll learn about one another as they discuss things like What are your current likes?  What do you like to spend time on when you are not at school? What do you wonder about?  What is something you’d like to learn more about?  What is one thing about you that you really would love to share about yourself?

Families are invited to attend this special day, from 4:00-6:00, on November 15.  Please join us!  We look forward to a wonderful learning experience together!

A Folwell Falcon Calming Strategy....

Here is one of the calming strategies that we have taught our Folwell Falcons!

It is ok to have feelings, sometimes they are strong, and this is a way to help us stay calm and engaged in our school activities.

Gas Main Work and Folwell Walking Routes

In collaboration with Rochester Public Schools Transportation Department, Folwell students and families who walk to school are to use 7th Street Southwest, instead of 6th Street Southwest, when walking to school during this gas main maintenance work.  There is a crossing guard at the four-way stop on the corner of 14th Avenue SW and 7th St SW, and there are patrols to assist with crossing on 15th Ave SW and 7th St SW.

Please see the Public Service Announcement below, from the City of Rochester Public Works Department for more information.

There are maps available in the Folwell Office, for your reference, as well.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.  Feel free to call, email or come in to meet with me.

Thank you!

RPS Facilities Task Force

Dear Families,

Last Tuesday, the school board heard from the District’s consultants and Facilities Task Force Co-chairs. The presentation provided information on referendum goals, the housing study, and current draft options. The consultants and co-chairs were seeking feedback from the school board on the current options. The longer term objective of the Facilities Task Force is to define elements/scope for the survey by the end of November. You may view the facilities task force information from the October 16 school board meeting on YouTube by clicking the following link, or copying and pasting it into your web browser:

Your feedback is also important as we continue through the facilities process. To provide feedback, please join the consultants and task force at the next Citizen Voice meeting on Wednesday, November 7 from 5:30 – 7:30 PM in the Edison Board Room (615 7th Street SW). If you are unable to attend in person, you may live stream the meeting on the RPS YouTube page (@ISD535) and you will have an opportunity to provide feedback electronically. For those of you that are on Facebook, here is a link to the meeting invitation:

Hearing screenings will be done on:

  • All 1st graders and those students in grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th who do not have a screening on file with Rochester Public Schools or who have failed their previous screening.
  • Kindergarten students will be screened, if they failed their preschool screening.
  • Students may also self-refer or be referred by the parent/guardian, or by staff members to rule out a hearing or vision concern.

Vision screenings will be done on:

  • All 1st and 3rd graders and those students in grades 2nd, 4th and 5th who do not have a screening on file with Rochester Public Schools or who have failed their previous screening.
  • Kindergarten students will be screened, if they failed their preschool screening.

Vision and hearing are critical to learning and the RPS health staff strongly encourages that students be screened.

If you wish to decline either of the screenings, please contact Nurse Kelly at or call your child’s building by Tuesday, October 30, 2018.  Please indicate your child’s name, grade and teacher, along with which screening you do not want us to do.

If your child is screened, you will only be contacted, if we believe your child may need a professional evaluation.

Are you doing a little fall cleaning?  Have your children outgrown their clothes from last year and you aren’t sure what to do with them?  The Folwell Health Office can help J

We are in need of clothes to help when kids get wet outside, have accidents, clothes get ripped, etc.  Sweatpants and leggings are most in need, particularly in the smaller sizes, but anything would be greatly appreciated.  If you have anything, you can drop off at the front desk or in the health office before or after school or during school hours.

Thank you!

UPDATED Folwell Traffic Plan

Folwell Elementary School continues to collaborate with Rochester Police Department, Rochester City Traffic Engineers, Olmsted Public Health, Rochester Public Schools Department of Health and Safety, Neighborhood Associations and Rochester Public Schools Transportation Department regarding our traffic plan and safe routes to school.

A recent update is that instead of queuing on 14th Avenue, heading south, that families enter the traffic pattern on 12th Avenue.  Then, queue on 7th Street, heading west, towards the school.  PLEASE BE MINDFUL NOT TO BLOCK DRIVEWAYS, as per request of our Folwell neighbors.

If you want to park and walk to school, you may park on 7th Street, on the east bound side of the street.

Cars on 7th street, between 12th Avenue and 15th Avenue are in the queue for "load and go" and drivers must remain in the vehicles.  Students remain near the corner of 15th Avenue with adult supervision.  A crossing guard is assisting at the NEWLY updated four way stop at 14th Avenue and 7th Street.

A Folwell Elementary Mantra is "Together We Will."  We can do a lot of great things when we all work together - let's keep our students and families safe during dismissal!

Thank you!
