Folwell Distance Learning Information

March 31, 2020

Hello, Folwell Families!

After a rainy, windy weekend, it is fantastic to see the sun!  Hoping that you and your family are able to enjoy the weather and find new ways to enjoy time together during Rochester Public Schools Spring Break!  Spring Break is March 30-April 3. We will not be sending out resources during this time so that families and staff are able to rest and rejuvenate while we cope with the changes and the impact on our lives; especially as we prepare for the upcoming adventure of distance learning.

We have all had to adjust to many changes within our community, our schools and our homes.  Folwell staff have been learning new things together in order to support our students, their families and one another.  We have creatively found ways to intentionally provide great learning opportunities for our students as they learn with new platforms and applications.  We have also empathized and planned with our families in mind as well all work together to support our ongoing student learning.
We wanted to give you a quick overview of what you can expect when distance learning instruction begins on Monday, April 6.

Folwell Elementary School has committed to a school-wide, web-based platform in an effort to make things consistent and manageable for our families.  We’ll be using Google Classroom. We have worked with families of our staff members to attempt to access the programs from a variety of devices in our homes to ensure that barriers to access are removed.  We know that in addition to iPads, tablets, Chromebooks, laptops, computer desktops and cell phones, families can access content through SMART TVs and game systems, such as Xbox. In addition with each lesson, we will share a menu of ways that students can respond, either through Google Classroom, email, phone calls, etc.  Staff will provide choices for students to share learning.

Google Classroom allows for support staff, such as interventionists and special education staff, to serve as a co-instructor of each class.  This allows them to collaborate with staff members, modify materials that the classroom teacher has provided, and post individual assignments and support to the student profile in a confidential matter.

Your children’s classroom teachers will send you login information on Monday, April 6.  Please review the information and help your child get logged in to the programs that they will be utilizing.  They are already familiar with many of the tools that will be used. Your child’s teacher will be checking in with you on Monday to make sure that you are able to access the information.  The initial learning will be related to accessing the materials needed for future learning.

Here is an online tutorial that we found to guide you.  It was created by another teacher in another district, but, is very helpful and simplifies how to get up and running: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Iowi-gmbys

We know that families have varying work schedules and our teachers understand that your children may not be keeping their regular school hours.  We ask that you find a time each day that works for your children to engage in the activities provided by teachers. Attendance will be taken, by Folwell staff, based on your children’s interactions with their teachers each day.

Our teachers and staff are prepared to help guide you through distance learning.  As always, please reach out with questions you may have along the way.

Please let our Folwell students know that we love them, care about them, believe in them and miss them VERY much!

Wishing you well –
