Welcome! We are so excited to have you and your student join
us next fall! Folwell is an amazing community of learners and we’re eager to
have you join us as Folwell Falcons!
When we are at Folwell for our learning, a typical school day includes breakfast, a
morning meeting to build relationships and community within the classroom,
whole group and small group instruction and practice reading and math, read a
louds, silent reading time, and snack. Social Studies and Science are
integrated within the other learning opportunities. Support staff provide
services in special education, speech, reading, English Languge and Gifted and
Talented Education. There are also
special areas taught by other teachers. These include Physical Education,
Music, Media and Art. Students also go to the cafeteria for lunch and then have
recess outside. We utilize “SOAR” as the guide to our school expectations:
Safety, Own Your Behavior, Always Learning and Respectful.
Through Distance Learning, teachers have worked together to
identify the prioritized educational standards for students. Lessons are
presented using Google Classroom and Seesaw. Students watch videos, share their
learning in different and virtual ways, as well as connect with Google Meets.
There are a few Google Meets for the entire class throughout the week and then
there are individualized opportunities each week, as well. Students utilize
home computers and devices, or the school can also provide them with a
Chromebook or an iPad.
Whether we are physically at school or in our virtual spaces,
it is our priority and commitment to continue cultivating relationships with
students and families. We will continue to plan for next fall with your student
and family’s best interests in mind. We will communicate updates from both the
District and school level as we get closer to the fall.
Folwell
utilizes a FaceBook page to share announcements and celebrations about our
school. You can find us at facebook.com/folwellelementaryschool. We encourage
you to “like” us and begin to share with your student as a way to help them get
to know things about their new learning environment. We also use a blog as our
school wide newsletter. We encourage you to go to the blog and enter your email
address so that you receive updates. You can access this at www.folwell.info. When school begins, you
will receive newsletters from your child’s teacher.
Please
mark your calendar with some important dates. Folwell kicks off the school year
with “Step Into Learning.” This is an opportunity for families to have an
individual conference with the teacher. You will receive communication in
August with instructions and links to sign up for a time on either August 31 or
September 1. Finally, the first day of school for the 2020-2021 school year
will be September 2!!
As you know this is uncharted territory for our Folwell
Families, Rochester Public Schools, and our entire state. We have heard from
the Minnesota Department of Education that additional guidance and decisions on
how school will run in the fall will be announced the week of July 27. We
are proud of our school and staff efforts with Distance Learning and equally
proud of the partnership with our families. We will work hard to build
relationships with your family and your student as we embark on this journey!
Once again, welcome to Folwell! We use a mantra, “Together We
Will.” We know that with your partnership we’ll continue to do great things!
Please feel free to call or email if you have questions.
