Second Step Begins!

 Dear Family,

We want your child to be successful in school and that means encouraging their whole development. While excelling in academic classes is important, children also need skills to take on new learning challenges, make good decisions, manage strong emotions, and get along with others.

This week, we began Second Step Elementary, a research based social-emotional learning program designed to improve student’s social-emotional skills. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school. Four units will cover the following:

Growth Mindset and Goal Setting: Children learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, and apply goal setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

Emotion Management: Children learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies- including stress management for older students- to calm strong feelings.

Empathy and Kindness: Children learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.

Problem-Solving: Children learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:

S: Say the problem

T: Think of solutions

E: Explore the outcomes

P: Pick a solution

You’ll receive weekly communication from your child’s teacher to help you reinforce Second Step language, skills, and goals at home. If you have any questions about Second Step Elementary please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, or school counselor, Stephanie Evans Hanson (stevanshanson@rochesterschools.org).

Thank you for your support as we work to build a safe and supportive school community!

Physical Education Welcome Letter

Hello,

My name is Mr. Thome and I am one of the Physical Education teachers at Folwell.  I am excited to be back with the students again after the summer break, and I am proud to be a part of your child’s education!

The Rochester Elementary Physical Education (PE) program provides emphasis on health, physical fitness, and development of the skills, and habits necessary for a lifetime of health-related and recreational activities.  This program also provides enjoyment, challenge, and social interaction through a variety of activities.  The students will receive a physical education report card each trimester that reflects their progress.

Students are expected to wear safe, athletic shoes and clothes appropriate for active participation.  We will be running, jumping, kicking, etc. Sandals, boots, crocs, heels, platforms, etc…are unsafe and should not be worn during physical education class.  Please do not feel you must buy an expensive pair of shoes for class.  All I ask is that the shoes you provide for your child are comfortable and designed for athletic activities.

You will find the ABC calendar on this link below, which can help them to remember what days to bring their shoes to school for their PE time.  https://www.rochesterschools.org/families/calendars

In PE class I expect all students to come prepared, (please work on tying shoes J) be respectful listeners, use safe body control, be positive toward others, and to try their best.  Our goal in PE is to be physically active, improve motor skills, cooperate with others, and have fun!  I want students to understand that fitness can be fun, and can lead to a better lifestyle.

Also, if you have any health or social concerns regarding your child, please send a letter or feel free to contact me at clthome@rochesterschools.org  The health and safety of your child is very important to me. I also want to ensure you that our PE department will strictly follow all the cleaning and social distancing guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other sicknesses as well.

Sincerely,

Clint Thome

Kindergarten 2021-2022

August 5, 2021

Dear Families of Future Folwell Kindergartners,

Welcome! We are so excited to have you and your student join us this fall!  Folwell is an amazing community of learners and we’re eager to have you join us as Folwell Falcons!

At Folwell there are three kindergarten classrooms. It  is our priority and commitment to continue cultivating relationships with students and families.  A typical school day includes a morning meeting to build relationships and community within the classroom, centers to differentiate for different student skills in both reading and math, read alouds, silent reading time, coloring and free choice time to play. There are also special areas taught by other teachers.  These include Physical Education, Music, Media and Art.  Students also go to the cafeteria for lunch and then have recess outside.

Please mark your calendar with some important dates.  Families and students will be asked to participate in a brief assessment on Tuesday, August 17, with times available during the day, as well as the evening.  Your child will meet with a teacher for 10-15 minutes and perform various academic tasks in order to better understand your child’s needs and strengths. You and your child can arrive anytime between the hours of 9:00am and 11:30am or 4:00pm and 6:00pm. There is no need to sign up beforehand. This screener is different than the Early Childhood Check-In screener offered at the Northrup building.

Click HERE for a letter from our kindergarten team with more details.

Also, Folwell kicks off the school year with “Step Into Learning.” This is an opportunity for families to have an individual conference with the teacher.  You will receive communication in August with instructions and links to sign up for a time on either August 30 or 31.  Finally, the first day of kindergarten for the 2021-2022 school year is September 1!

Folwell utilizes a FaceBook page to share announcements and celebrations about our school.  You can find us at facebook.com/folwellelementaryschool. We encourage you to “like” us and begin to share with your student as a way to help them get to know things about their new learning environment.  We also use a blog as our school wide newsletter.  We encourage you to go to the blog and enter your email address so that you receive updates. You can access this at www.folwell.info. When school begins, you will receive newsletters from your child’s teacher.

For more information, here is our District website for kindergarten: https://www.rochesterschools.org/academics/kindergarten

A wakelet is a content platform that will allow us to share videos of staff, students and families; links to important resources; and references to important information.  We can communicate updates from both the District and school level.

Our Folwell mantra is “Together We Will.” We are here to help and support you!  Our office is open from 8:15 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. during the week.  Please call us, email or stop by if you have any questions as we prepare for the journey ahead. We are looking forward to partnering with you!  Again, welcome to Folwell - ALL ARE WELCOME HERE!
