Morning Routine

The "S" in S.O.A.R. is for Safety and the "A" is for Always Learning.  It is with these expectations, and the best interest of our students, that we'll be making some adjustments to the morning routine.  We love our school, but we don't want to arrive too early!  Please do not arrive before 8:50 a.m.

We will allow students to enter the building at 9:00 a.m.  They'll have ten minutes to get out of winter clothing, enter their classrooms, and begin their morning jobs.  Instruction will begin at 9:10 a.m. and students arriving after 9:15 a.m. will be marked tardy, which is the current District-wide practice.  By bringing students safely inside in the morning and getting started on time with our day, we're able to maximize that time and get off to a great start - Always learning!

Gift Cards for the Holidays!

The Folwell Gift Card Fundraiser is a great way to help Folwell PTSA raise money to support the 5th grade overnight field trip to Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center, and you don't have to spend any more money than you normally would with your everyday shopping! This kind of program is sometimes known as "scrip". We purchase the gift cards for all of our Folwell families in a large bulk order, and the participating retailers give us a percentage of the face value to keep for our PTSA, up to 15% or more! For example, a Chipotle gift card purchased for $10 is worth the full value of $10 when spent at Chipotle, but the Folwell PTSA will get 10% of the total, or $1. The money adds up quickly! You earn money for our school without spending a single additional penny!

Click below for information on how to complete an order!

We will continue to accept gift card orders until winter break, but to be a part of our next order, please turn in your form by next Friday, December 7th.

Give to the Max

GiveMN launched its “Give to the Max Day” over 7 years ago, a 24-hour day of giving intending to rally and inspire citizens to donate to charities.  Last year, Minnesotans broke a record, donating more than $18 million to schools and non-profits.  First prize this year for schools and non-profits is a chance to win $10,000!

Give to the Max Day is an opportunity to support the Folwell PTSA, specifically the current book needs of your children.  Your charitable contribution would help purchase 28 leveled book bins for our students.

Some book bin facts:
*Our children’s books are leveled by color and organized in bins for easy accessibility for both student and teacher.
*Book bins contain a variety of fiction and informational texts to keep a reader engaged and excited about reading.
*A book bin costs $240.

Currently, Folwell has a sufficient number of yellow and green book bins.  However, what about our red and blue readers?  What about orange, purple, and bronze?  We are lacking book bins for those children.  With an adequate number of texts in each reading level, every child will be given the opportunity to successfully grow their literacy skills.

Please consider making a donation on November 12 to the Folwell PTSA.

Go to, click on “donate,” and search for Folwell PTSA (please do not select Folwell School as this is an inactive group on the site).   Then make your donation!

Together, we hope to raise more than $6000 for books for the Folwell students.
YOU can help us reach our goal!

Thank you,
Folwell PTSA

*Give to the Max Day is Thursday, November 12.  However, you can participate in advance and gifts made prior to the event will be transacted on November 12.  The advantage to early participation is avoiding potential Internet problems (so many non-profits and so many caring supporters can lead to slow processing on the Give to the Max site).

Safety Drills

October 19, 2015

Dear Folwell Families,

Rochester Public Schools strive to make our schools safe and welcoming environments.  In collaboration with The School Safety Network, we are updating and practicing our safe schools procedures.  Folwell Elementary, along with other elementary schools in the District and SACC, have installed the school buzzer system. This limits access to our school building in addition to having video monitoring and door alarms on every door. We also continue to practice the state mandated fire, tornado, lockdown and evacuation plans.

Rochester Public Schools has been proactive in training staff in crisis response.  As a school, we will practice a lockdown and talk about what to do in the event of an emergency situation.  We know that every situation may need a specific response; therefore, students will be discussing with their classroom teacher hiding, running and barricading.  Although these are very difficult conversations, it is our priority to be preventative and prepared.  Below are ‘talking points’ that classroom teachers will use following the drill. Be assured that your child’s safety is our utmost concern.

Please speak with your child after the practice about school safety, the same as when talking about safety in the home and in the community.  Emphasize to your child that schools are safe. If you need assistance in speaking with your child about school safety the following resources may be beneficial.

You are also welcome to contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you,

Wendy J. Moritz, Principal

Candy Drive

For Operation Hometown Gratitude

Folwell SACC is NOW collecting Halloween candy to send

as well as, give to underprivileged children in Rochester. Please

Athletic Event Guidelines

In partnership with our high schools, we are sharing communication in regards to expectations at District-Wide Extra Curricular Events.  We are so proud of our Folwell Falcons and the spirit that they show every day, here at Folwell, with S.O.A.R. The intent is to highlight common expectations for all District spectators.  Thank you for your support!

Dear Families:
We are reaching out to you to partner regarding our athletic events. We want to ensure that our athletic events are a fun and safe experience for all.
Please review the following guidelines with your child:
1. All middle school and elementary students attending games must be accompanied by their own parent or guardian.
2. Students are expected to sit at events in student assigned areas or stay with their parent or guardian.
3. All high school students must show student ID upon entry.
4. No food or beverages are allowed to be brought into athletic events.
5. No backpacks are allowed at athletic events.
6. If students are not meeting behavioral expectations by being respectful, responsible and safe, they will be asked to leave the event
Please remember that when students are attending school sponsored events they must adhere to the Code of Student Conduct (Policy #506). If students fail to adhere to the Code of Student Conduct they could be subject to in-school consequences regarding their actions.

Fall Cleanup

We are also in need of garden tools that day - volunteers, thanks for bringing a few...a couple wheelbarrows would be especially useful. In addition, if you have newspaper to contribute, we will be using that for weed control.

Light refreshments provided. This is a great opportunity to practice community service with your children & fill a need for our school!

Running Club

We have enjoyed a wonderful season of fall running club.  The weather has been amazing and it is so fun to see so many students out running or walking every morning before school.

Just a reminder:

This is our last week of running club.  Friday Oct. 9th is our final day.

Many thanks to all our fabulous volunteers who came out to support, supervise and keep track of all our running club students.  We couldn’t do it without the extra hands and eyes our parents and volunteers bring to running club every day.  Thank you for keeping running club safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Running club will return in the spring, April 25th weather permitting. We will begin training for the Med City Marathon and will be keeping track of laps.   Daily 5$ gift card drawings and weekly 25$ drawings will provide extra incentive to come out on those cold, wet, spring mornings.  Look for a registration form after spring break.

Enjoy a fabulous school year, and a fun, safe winter.  We look forward to seeing everyone again in April!!

Thank you

Running Club Update

Welcome back to school!!  We hope everyone has enjoyed a great first week.

Fall Running Club begins Monday, September 14th at 8:45 AM, on the playground.  We will meet every morning to run laps before school beginning Monday and ending Friday, October 9th.  Students should enter the playground through the gate on the 6th street side.

Volunteers are needed!! If you haven’t already done so, please sign up to volunteer at running club .  Volunteers are needed to keep track of attendance and supervise students.  Ideally, we like to have 6 volunteers each morning.  Two or three volunteers checking students in, and 3 to four keeping their eyes on students to ensure safety. This is a great opportunity to meet parents and get to know our amazing Folwell students!!

Everyone is welcome at running club!  Families should have received an orange registration sheet in their red folders on Meet the Teacher Night.   Please check the cabinet in front of the office if you need a form.  A registration form is required for participation.

Teachers and staff LOVE running club.  It is an excellent outlet for students to socialize and work excess energy out before class.  Teachers report students arriving to class ready to learn.  Fall running club is just for fun, and not in preparation for any specific event.  If your child is interested in working toward a specific running goal, please check out the following event:

Med City Half Marathon September 20th

Students who come to running club every day of the week will be entered into a $10 gift card drawing each week.  Thank you PTSA!

In cooperation with the implementation of our new drop off procedures, we will not be running around the block in the event of wet/muddy playground conditions.  Running club will be cancelled due to inclement weather.  However, dew and overnight rains can make for a wet playground.  Parents/guardians should use their discretion if these conditions are likely.  Please consider packing an extra pair of socks and/or shoes on these days.  Students must wear appropriate closed toed shoes to running club.

Also, in lieu of new drop off/parking protocol volunteers are encouraged to park on 7th street east of 14th Ave.

We look forward to another fun and safe year of running club!

Thank you,

Sarah Lichty and Colleen Timimi

Volunteers in Education

What is Volunteers in Education?
The Volunteers in Education (ViE) program was created in 1977 and serves to enrich education in the Rochester Public Schools by making the time, talents, and expertise of parents/guardians, community members, and community businesses available to students and staff.

Volunteers have played, and will continue to play, an important and valuable role in education. Our students, teachers, administrators, parents and the Rochester community reap the benefits from the volunteer efforts of people who share their talents and resources.

As a volunteer, you will receive many rewards. You will find yourself filling the needs of students in a role that utilizes your time, talents and interests in immeasurable ways. Voluntary assistance in the education of students of all ages offers ways for you to contribute to your community while, at the same time, experience a deep sense of personal accomplishment.

If this is your first time volunteering in the district, please complete this brief application.

Summer Learning Garden

Every child at Folwell has planted a veggie, fruit or flower this spring in the Learning Garden, and our hope is to keep things growing through the summer to enjoy the fruits of their labor! Can you and your family help by watering the Learning Garden one week this summer?

Watering can be a fun family activity and should be fairly simple using hoses and the spigot near the Learning Garden. The spigot operates with a key. At the end of your week connect with the next family to pass the key along.  Weeks are from Friday to Friday.  Families only need to water when it hasn't rained for a few days.

Bonus: Any family volunteering can also pick and eat the produce that is ready! In the past, folks have been kind and left produce, but really it should be picked and eaten when ripe!

If you are interested in volunteering please sign-up on this Folwell Learning Garden Summer 2015 Watering Schedule Google Spreadsheet.

Thanks for considering this opportunity!
